Our Home Tour on Cup of Jo

A good while back we had some photos taken of our home by the talented Sarah of Modern Kids Photography and happy to have the full house tour featured on Cup of Jo yesterday.

We live in the Richmond district of San Francisco. It’s a quiet neighborhood in an area that most people don’t consider too desirable because there aren’t many cool shops or restaurants besides a few hidden jems. Plus, it’s a little more foggy and not very walkable. We love it though. We’re right across from rose garden entrance to Golden Gate Park, the De Young and Japanese Tea Gardens and 2 minute drive from Golden Gate Bridge and 5 minutes from the beach. There are better schools out here than anywhere else in the city in a wonderful safe neighborhood. With prices sky rocketing in the city and the surrounding areas thanks to all the tech companies millionaires, prices are forcing everyone out in this direction and now our neighborhood school has more kids on its waitlist for kindergarten than any other school in the city. Don’t even get me started on the public school lottery assignment process. We don’t have a school at all right now. Nothing. No room! What kinds of work do you think Henry could get if his highest completed education degree is preschool?

Anyway, this living room above is my favorite part of the apartment (I’m supposed to start calling it a fancy flat here, but the name hasn’t quite stuck). The light in the morning through those windows is completely amazing. Henry even says he likes to sit in there in the morning because of the sun. Those windows make me happy everyday, truly.  It’s an upper level unit which means it gets great light and also means we have to walk up a couple sets of stairs. From the sunroom in the back (each bedroom has a door that leads to it) you can see the garden next door, the elementary school we can’t get into (^&**(&*!!!!) , the ocean, the bay, and a tip of the Golden Gate Bridge peeking above the Presidio trees. It’s lovely.

As I mentioned earlier this week, I’m working on a re-decorating project for Henry’s room but here are few cute pictures of his old room…

PS On a sidenote, that red chair in the living room pictures above has seen better days (the straps are all broken on the bottom) and we’re looking to hand it off to someone, email me if you live in the area and want it-free! liz (at) say yes to hoboken.com- TAKEN, THANKS!

You can tell this was a while ago – look how little Henry was! And remember that polka dot vintage maxi dress I refashioned?

I grew up down the hill from that garden and used to pick some sour apples from tiny trees and learned to roller skate at the school playground (before they rebuilt it and it was all trailers). We always called it a flat. My grandparents bought the building about 1960 and my grandmother still lives there. The layout of your place is surprisingly similar.

You have a lovely home! I’m moving to San Francisco and would love to have a garden plot. How did you sign up for a plot? My husband and I have one right now where we live and have loved gardening. We’re just sad we’re leaving it before the main harvest season.

Hey Liz, I remember seeing that photo of your craft room in the Chronicle back in February. It’s great to see the rest of your house. It’s so beautiful and sunny.

Funny story (and not to sound at all creepy or anything), but you live on the same street as my boyfriend. I remember thinking that when I first read the Chronicle article. Just looking at the photo and description and thinking, “OMG, I love her blog and she’s probably like, a house away. How cool!” I’m pretty sure we must have passed each other in the garden or on the street at some point. Now that the summer’s here, the garden is becoming a very popular destination. I remember studying for finals at my boyfriend’s a few weeks back, and we’d find ourselves trading the raucous laughter of the children at the elementary school on weekdays for that of families having fun in the garden on weekdays. We’d get annoyed at everyone for having fun while we had to stay inside and study. Hopefully you get a plot down there again. The garden really is a joy to see out his window every day!

I’m pretty sure I remember when you got the red chair (and that sounds completely creepy!), but I had seen in in TJ Maxx in Logan right before you posted about it. It totally wouldn’t have fit in our house, not to mention red isn’t my color, but I wanted to have it anyway!

Hey Liz, I love your FLAT!!
Where did you get the chevron carpet?
Thank you!

If the chair is still available we will come and get it.

I loved the tour, and the insights were great- the part about the stuffed animal is hilarious. Really pretty home!

Liz,
The feature on A Cup of Jo has made me love you and your blog even more! I literally laughed to myself at the part about the white leather. 🙂 I love when writers write how they talk, it makes you seem like a friend. 🙂 Your home is so awesome and family friendly. Having a family of my own makes me really appreciate that – it gives me ideas – and who doesn’t need those. I am so happy for you and your growing family. Good things really do come to those who wait (and wait and wait).

Ha, thanks Emily! Joanna interviewed me over the phone so it really was how I was talking to her. It was fun to discuss little snippets of our home!

Beautiful home ! Hope the school thing works out soon 🙂

Hey Liz! I love your place. I could never understand why the Richmond isn’t more popular. You get so much more space and you don’t really hit traffic if you want to go to busier areas.
Anyway, we live nearby and might be interested in the chair! My husband wanted that style but we could never afford it. Please let me know if its available and I’ll ask my husband if we can fit it in the car.
Thanks!
