I get so many questions about my new-ish hair ‘do that I thought I’d share a few details about it and some of my favorite products to keep the color from fading and staying a nice platinum silvery shade…
My decision to cut it short and dye it silvery white was in some ways a long time coming. My hair is very fine, like baby fine, so growing it out never works. It just starts to split and gets even more stringy and thin the longer it gets. It doesn’t help either that I’ve been highlighting it since I was 18 years old!
I was really feeling the platinum silver color, but knew my fine hair wouldn’t be able to handle that kind of damage so it had to be cut really short. Also, I was in the mood for something drastic! This image was the one I took to my stylist for cut inspiration, but wanting a slightly cooler tone (more like this tone).
Here are a couple tips to keep the platinum shade and tone I’ve found:
Don’t wash it every day. When you do, try to use cooler water. A cold shower sounds terrible though. What I do is keep my hair out of the hot shower until I’m ready to wash and then turn down the temperature a bit for a minute while I wash.
When you do wash, use these two products that I LOVE. The combination of following two maintains my silvery platinum color beautifully. First, Shimmer Lights Shampoo. This was recommended to be my a stylist friend I know who works at Paris Fashion Week. I swear, she knows all the tricks and it’s only $6.99!
For conditioning, I always use Kevin Murphy Blonde Angel Treatment. The combination of the shampoo and the conditioning treatment is crazy good. It make a huge difference. I didn’t use them the first time, back in October when I first had my hair dyed, and it lost its color very fast. The second time around though, I’m coming up on almost three months since my last coloring (which is definitely overdue) and my tone still looks pretty good! Before, within a month it started to get brassy. It’s definitely not brassy now, which is the ultimate goal. I do need to get it colored again, but it’s still a nice cool white.

This hairstyle looks very well-groomed. And a good haircut means a lot, because if the hair is damaged, no care will save them, they can only be cut. I’ve seen some cool tools here https://wisebarber.com/best-hair-clippers/ for home use. This will help you clean up without leaving the house
I love the Kevin Murphy Blonde Angel conditioner! I use it on my 7 year old’s blonde hair when it starts getting brassy (which happens quickly with her regular swimming) and I’m always amazed at what a difference it makes. When I’m out of it I use a little bit of purple hair color (Joico Color Intensity in Orchid) mixed with regular conditioner in her hair and that does the trick too. It also adds ever so slight purple highlights to her hair which help combat the yellow look. I’ve always wanted to go platinum myself, but I know I’d be terrible at the upkeep and I’m so bad at getting myself to the hairdresser that I’d always have a ton of regrowth!
Do you use shimmer lights every day? and how long do you keep it in?
Hi! I wash my hair probably every 3 days and use Shimmer Lights Every time. I don’t leave it in, just scrub and wash out.
Jihrmack actually has a shampoo and conditioner for silver hair, it’s neon purple….. love it
There is also a spray in leave in conditioner and purple mouse I use. Got them and Bed, Bath and Beyond! Keeps my white white and silver shimmering!!!
Ooooh good tips!
Love purple shampoo but I can’t stamd the old lady smell of shimmer lights! I swear by a brand called Fudge. Love this hair cut on you!
Ha! Luckily I don’t have that same aversion to the smell!
These are awesome tips! I’ve been loving the silver hair trend!

I love your hair – so stylish and gorgeous! I probably wouldn’t be able to find the time and effort to maintain it myself. Major props to you! ❤️❤️
