At age two Edie is just starting to learn her colors and shapes, and it’s really fun to work on games that reinforce them. Today we’re sharing this easy matching game that’s made of simple shapes and colors, and oversized so toddlers can get their wiggles out while they learn. We partnered with STAINMASTER™ and their High Traffic Carpet Cleaner for this post to make clean up easy for our well loved family room carpet.

This is the first time we’ve had carpet in a home. It’s just in the downstairs family room and although I love the look of wooden floors more, a nice clean carpet is a really cozy place for the family to play. This is one of my favorite rooms in the house because it has really large window and door that leads out to the backyard. I loved the idea of having a family room where kids could wonder in and outside. But with that comes a lot of dirt that gets dragged in (despite how many times I remind them to wipe their feet on the mat).
With backyard access and lots of toddler snacks, come messes. STAINMASTER™ has a great product called Carpet High Traffic Cleaner that’s perfect for this area in our home. STAINMASTER™’s whole Carpet Care line is designed to clean while also protecting your carpet. They leave behind a nice fresh scent and an invisible shield to repel dirt to protect against resoiling, keeping your carpet looking newer longer so we can spend more time playing! Because that’s what this room is for: serious play!
For this giant matching game today we grabbed some 12 x 12 card stock from the craft store and construction paper. Edie and her friend Hazel helped cut out the shapes and glue pairs of them onto the paper. We used a lot of orange and pink because those are Edie’s favorite colors right now. When you’re cutting and gluing, it’s a good idea to talk about the colors and shapes on each paper.
Then, when the glue is dry, set up the squares face down and take turns turning them over to find the matches. If your toddler is solid on colors but shaky on shapes, have them start to match just the colors first and then move to colors and shapes when they get better recognizing them.
The fun thing about it being so big is that they can run around and get some exercise too! Edie can’t really sit still at this age, so any active game like this is perfect for her.
Afterwards, we cleaned with the STAINMASTER™ Carpet High Traffic Cleaner.
It removes tough stains and begins cleaning on contact, so we can keep on with our game.
Thanks to STAINMASTER™ and their Carpet Care line for sponsoring this post and keeping our carpets looking top notch.
