Summer Kids Craft: Mini Painted Clay Pots

diy kids craft mini clay pot

Henry has been doing this funny thing lately where he makes something with playdough and then wants to let it dry so it will harden, which of course doesn’t really work- we have little bits of cracked playdough all over the house now. Seems like it was time to get more air dry polymer clay for some real clay projects! diy kids craft mini clay pots

He’s been talking a lot about having more plants in the house (buuuut we’re gonna stick to succulents since I have a habit of killing plants) so we decided to make a few mini clay pots and paint them some fun colors. Henry molded all three and we each painted one (you can probably guess which ones we each did) and then collaborated on painting the third (the blue polka dot).

Supplies:

Polymer clay

Craft paints- I like this set from Martha Stewart

1. Start with a ball of polymer clay about the size of a plum or kiwi. Roll out polymer clay with a rolling pin, not too thin (although you can always fold the dough over onto itself if its too thin and your child is ambitious with that roller)

2. Show your child how to fold up the sides. Don’t worry about it being smooth, the little pinch marks and creases is what makes them sweet and handmade! Just try to help them flatten the bottom out a bit and be sure it’s not too thin (we did a lot of folding to make it stand kind of straight up).

3. Using a butter knife, help your child write the letter of their name, or even initials on the bottom so it will be  easy to identify.

I want to make one! I have some succulents I’ve been needing to pot. I will make some myself (since I don’t have any kids) but they’ll probably end up looking like kids made them…! Oh well!

What a cute project! Would be fun to make a bunch for teacher gifts
