Community Garden Plot

We somehow managed to score a plot in the community garden next door (normally it’s a 2 or 3 year waiting list!). It’s a funny skinny plot up against the fence but I don’t care, it’s all ours. Now I have to decide what to plant. Any planting suggestions for the cool San Francisco climate this late in the summer? Was thinking something with vines to cling to the fence, like grapes.

While grape vines are beautiful, they take a long time to grow and mature, and probably wouldn't do so well here in the city due to the climate. I third the peas/beans. Perhaps scarlet runner beans? Tomatoes are a fantastic idea though it depends on how much sun you get. I like the idea of raspberries or even logan berries (hybrid blackberry/raspberry). My mom grows them in Berkeley and always has abundant results on a semi-shaded side yard. I don't know many places to visit in the city (our backyard here is in major need of work but it's on the backburner for now) but if you ever head to the East Bay, there are lots of nurseries like Berkeley Hort, East Bay nursery, etc. Good luck!

I second mixed greens and peas…so easy to grow and they love cooler climates

I love raspberries along a fence, and they practically grow themselves.

thanks for all the ideas, guys. I'm so excited to get workin'

I'm in Vancouver, BC, and still putting things in my garden, so it's definitely not too late for you!I've found that I get the most value out of growing tomatoes and mixed greens, because neither travel particularly well and are best eaten as fresh as possible. (There is nothing — nothing! — like picking your salad right before dinner.) At this point in the season, you can get some seedlings for both and still expect to start harvesting in August and well into September. If you know you'll be returning to the same plot next year, you could plant a raspberry vine. It will establish itself this summer and could very well yield a lot of fruit next summer. Good luck! And have fun!

How great that you got a spot! And you can plant things almost year round in CA.

golden gate gardening book is your ticket but i would suggest kael, swiss chard, radishs, lettuce mix, herbs and maybe a dwarf citrus to prune to run along the fence. grape vines can be tricky. happy gardening.

you should check out the book Golden Gate Gardening, if you haven't already. It has lots of great advice for gardening in San Francisco all year round.
