I read a piece recently suggesting instead of continually searching for work/life balance, to change your focus on another goal…
The idea is looking to achieve harmony as opposed to balance. The article mentions, “This idea comes from the concept in music, where different notes are sounded together to create a beautiful sound. The non musical definition is “the quality of forming a pleasing or consistent whole”.
Perhaps, it isn’t about balance at all, but more about tuning the notes in our work and home lives to achieve more positive results in either. Small shifts instead of shaming ourselves into more or less of one feels much more healthy don’t you think?
A few questions from the piece to get you thinking about what small notes to tune in your routine:
—What aspects of my life are having the most positive/negative affect on my work?
—What aspects of my work are having the most positive/negative affect on my life?
—Can I improve an area of my life by shifting something with my work?
—Can I improve an area of my work by shifting something in my life?
—What changes could I make to life and work so that each supports me better in living to my fullest potential?
What do you think? Does it help you to shift this perspective?
