I was at a friend’s home for a goal setting workshop last month, and another woman brought up this concept I can’t stop thinking about…
Nourishing vs Numbing.
When you’re in need of self care, to double check the activity against a standard question of “Is this nourishing me or numbing me?”. The question can also be applied to relationships, patterns, boundaries or other little decisions throughout the day when we’re looking to give ourselves attention, wind down from the day, or relax.
It was interesting to think about. Without a bit of intention around this topic, we naturally reach for the numbing activities- excess social media, eating, alcohol, shopping. The easy, ‘quick fix’. But it’s tricky, right? Where’s the line? A bowl of ice cream might be well deserved after a long day and nothing to feel shame about.
Maybe starting by being aware of how it’s making us feel afterwards and whether the self care was really achieved.
Lots more ideas about it in this piece on Medium. What do you think, is this a good litmus test for you to choose the best self care activity? It’s been helpful for me.
What a way to look at it. I think we can all be a little guilty of numbing things instead of actually working on them.
