What Does ‘Having It All’ Mean To You?
Forty years ago the phrase was coined, but our definitions continue to be as vastly different as our experience as women and mothers. There are a lot of strong opinions out there on what as women, we should think about the idea of ‘having it all’. How to balance the demands of career and family. What we should want, if it’s even possible, and if we should enjoy it when we’ve achieved it. It’s dizzying, to be honest.
On her site, Having It All, Etienne photographed and collected interviews from her community here in the bay area (look for mine!), and then around the world in her travels to Singapore, Myanmar and India this past year. She also wrote a piece for Medium about what’s she learned. Rather than cast judgement or try to define what it should be, it’s simply a beautiful collection on perspectives on what ‘having it all’ means to women today. The range and diversity of our experience as women and mothers is empowering and eye opening.
