When I found this pretty rose fabric at a yard sale last year I knew exactly what I need to make with it: a high waisted, big bow pencil skirt. It was just kind of meant to be and I’ve been saving it since then.
I used a pencil skirt tutorial from a sewing book I got for Christmas called Sew Everything Workshop. I love it because it has actual patterns + easy to read instructions with pictures. Of course I had to add the high waist band + the big bow.
New things I learned this time: an invisible zipper, invisible hemming + darts!I love the freedom of creating any skirt you want in any fabric. Sewing is kind of my new obsession. I have a bunch more projects in the works to show you, so stayed tuned!
I need you opinion though: how do we feel about the length? Does it need to be hemmed up to my knees? I’m still unsure
love this! Where is the peter pan color shirt from?? I saw it on pinterest and was like, I NEED THIS OUTFIT!!
Your skirt is gorgeous, and so is the photo! I am pretty sure I "pinned" it on Pinterest… Kuddos for learning the darts and hidden zipper. I have yet to learn the "regular" zipper. ๐ You have a great blog -I'm going back to look around some more…
I love your Skirt ….
Chair + Skirt = Perfection!
I loves this photo + skirt1
what a beautiful color that is! And the fabric looks substantial, too. Love it. Love it. Love it. Leave it long…it's so much more elegant. Any shorter would cheapen it. Glad you're enjoying your sewing. I put my machine away for many, many years and am just now creating away again….AND…my husband just bought me a new machine I'm addicted to.Keep creating away!xoxNancy
ohhh. DROOL. …..DROOL.
The length is just perfect!!! This is such a lovely skirt!
wow!!! im in shock this so gorgeous!!! i want one of these!!! ill buy one from you, and the lenght is perfect, i hate all these short skirts, long lenght is very classy!!! ๐
This skirt is perfect! I just discovered your blog via A Cup of Jo and thought I'd stop by and say hello :)xoCassie
Really cute skirt, and I think its current length makes it look sophisticated. Great job with the sewing! Next question: where'd you get that cute blouse?
Love the length! Too cute! What an inspiration.
love this skirt!I so need to learn to sew!!! i think you just pushed me into it!xxcallie
I have been meaning to stop by for some time and tell you that, well, you are amazing.
This is almost too much. So beautiful, and such gorgeous modeling shots. Love this length — it hits so flatteringly when you sit down.
Where can I buy this skirt? It's GORGEOUS!
I love it! What a great fabric too. I love that sewing book, I've had it for a few years and always take it out and marvel at the projects and then never do any of them…this one is great, I might have to pull that book out again…
awesome. did you know my mom made all of her own (super cute) clothes until she was 30? you will have to chat about it next time you see her. sad that i have no idea when that will be! : (
The skirt looks fantastic! I would hem it up and maybe let out the front darts just a bit, or shorten them so there is no puckering. They you will have a really custom fit!
what a stunning skirt, love the colour, love the bow! The current length makes it look very 1940's, gorgeous!
Beautiful as is!Wanna send one to Japan?
I love this skirt! And I would keep the length as is.
question: did you use a pattern and if so which one? p.s. keep the length. ๐
You're kind of amazing, liz! I took sewing in college and all of my stuff took hours and looked like crap – definitely not wearable. Excellent work!
Wowzers! Congrats to you. Its lovely. I'd say leave it this length for awhile, it really suits you, then perhaps hem it shorter next season/year, etc
I don't know that I would have ever guessed that I could love a skirt that was PINK with a BOW, but…::swoon::I think the length is just fine, given the body hugging nature. Flirty and sexy, but always appropriate.Name of link
It's perfect! Will you post a pattern?
the length is perfect & this is amazing. i wish i had your sewing abilities.
wowza! you are a genius, girl!
2 thumbs up! leave the length- it's more old fashion (in a super good way)
This is gorgeous! I wouldn't change a thing!
Don't change it! That length is so cute and retro! I'm in love with the pink and the bow, just adorable.
Lovely design for your skirt.Jana
I really really really love this skirt! I'm all about the bows! xoxo
this is the perfect skirt, i love it!
Wow. My thought when I saw the first photo was – "I am going to buy that skirt."Rats- I barely graduated from Home Ec. Keep the length! Looks amazing!
Oh my Liz. You're killing me with your sewing skills. I need to see it in person or a full body shot for the length. Or just ask your husband. Or Mark Elliot.
so pretty, i wish i could buy one. I'd do it in a heartbeat.
SO beautiful! you've totally inspired me- it's so fun to see your sewing skills progress instead of going to blogs where it seems like the girl has been sewing since the womb. you give us all hope and you make super cute stuff.
Go Liz! Fabulous skirt.
it's adorable but i would shorten it just a tad. lovely work!
this is incredible, seriously super cute
Liz, I love it! I am in SF, too, and have been wanting to start sewing dresses and skirts. Let me know if you ever need a test model for your designs. ๐
Gorgeous skirt!! The length does a lot for the skirt, I wouldn't change it a bit.You look so chic. Great job!
i LOVE this look! so sweet.
so pretty! reminds me of a "mad men" outfit..and that's definitely a good thing. i love!
I'm in love … this looks amazing!margie
I love it! I can't sew to save my life, but if I saw it at the store I would buy it in a heartbeat!
I think pencil skirts are best at the length you made it. Great job.
I would try sitting down in the skirt and seeing where the hem ends up. I typically like the hem to reach the top of my knees otherwise it feels like I'm baring more thigh that I want to.
Liz. Keep the length. The skirt is abs gorge and timeless!
love it Liz.
Love the length.
The second I opened up the blog page I thought, oh I hope that is for sale because I am getting it!I'm such so frustratingly new/impatient with sewing. sigh. so far away from pencil skirt perfection.
The length fits the fabric to a T, don't change a thing ๐
so cute, well done! i like the length, great to go with heels.
I LOVE this! Great Job Liz!
Sometimes I don't think you can get any cooler and than you go and do something like this. Love.
That skirt is AMAZING! Wow, I wish I could sew that well. So lovely.
it looks fabulous just the way it is!
your talent never ceases to amaze me! I think I would hem it up a bit.
You are amazing! I want one.
This is fast becoming one of my favourite blogs! I love the skirt, it looks fantastic. I think it would look good both ways, but I think it looks very glamourous (UK spelling) the length you have it now.
is it wool? i love the fabric!
super impressed, this is an adorable skirt. very chic.
This is a lovely skirt! I think it would be perfect at knee length, but it sounds as though others like it the way it is!
wow, thanks everyone! you're all too kind. maybe i will keep it this length and try to ignore the voice telling me that it's making my calves look huge
Gorgeous! Love the length unless shortening it would make it easier to walk in. ๐
love it! good job
Completely perfect! Leave as is.
Holy Crap! I am so in love with this, there aren't words. The color the bow, the shape! You never stop surprising me with your DIY skills.uberchicforcheap.blogspot.com
wow. when i first saw the pics before reading the text i thought "geez! I gotta get to anthropologie, they are getting some gorgeous new stuff!". you've got some talent. i'm way jeal.
Ummmmm that's amazing. If I totally copy you is it ok if I source you? That's a serious question. And I think the length would be great both ways, just for the record. It's certainly gotta be more comfortable to sit in church this length (especially with kids). ๐
yeowzers!want to make me one?you've got mad skills.I think I need to learn how to sew.how long have you been sewing?
Definitely keep it the way it is! I think Azucar gave the perfect explanation of why. I just love the skirt, nice work!
That is absolutely darling! Well done!
whaaaaaa? you made that? that skirt is ridonculous. in a good way. love it just the way it is.
Loving this, Liz. Such a beautiful colour and I can't get enough bows! The length looks great, esp. when you're sitting down.
I love mid calf length!
This would be a perfect skirt for the character of Emma Pillsbury on Glee! I can see it now. . .
um, your sewing skills have sky rocketed! so pretty!
oh my word lady, this looks amazing on you! good work! and from the pics, the length is perfect.
I absolutely love it. Make me one?Keep it as is.clothed much, a modest fashion blog

I think the current length is super chic–saves the skirt from being precious.
