Last weekend we have a huge party for my 40th birthday. It was a 70s disco theme (as a ’79 baby) and it was SO much fun. Had lots of questions about the lighting, so here are some details…
It’s amazing what an incredible vibe you can create without a big budget. I organized these items by tier, with the most essential/impactful at the top of the list, and then things that were ‘nice’ to have but we could have done without depending on your budget constraints. I also included a few things we had but wouldn’t use again.
1. Discoball (around $30). We always have one sitting on a bench in the living room. When the sun hits it, it’s ‘magic hour’.
2. Discoball motor + mount ($15).We didn’t mount our discoball on the ceiling, but actually on our mantle which seemed less destructive since you have to screw in three decent size screws into whatever you’re mounting it on. We kept the board and could mount it again at any time for another party. one.
3. Sky projector ($50). This thing is so amazingly special. It’s a bit on the pricey side but totally worth it for the effect you get. We actually used two for our large living room and then sold one to a friend afterwards. The kids love this thing and fight over whose room gets it at night.
4. Two spotlights for discoball. You need at least two to fill the whole room with disco lights.
5. Awesome 70s playlist. Free! We just made ours on Spotify
Those 5 items I would consider necessities for a proper disco party. For under $150 you can really create an incredible vibe that guests will want to spend the night dancing in.
10. Gold plates and gold sequin tablecloth. These were both perfect! We still have a bunch leftover for another glittery party.
11. Rainbow LED light. So much fun! We ended up returning it but I really loved the added vibe of it.
Something else fun! Jared has a big projector and we used it to project some old Soul Train videos in slow motion from YouTube, and some 70s lingerie commercials (HA!) in the dining room where food/drinks were. It was pretty awesome!
Had SUCH a fun night, things couldn’t have gone better. Okay, so there were a couple fires from the fondue pots but we put them out quick. HA!
