2. Carve a face with a pairing knife and scoop out the insides with a spoon. You could use a grapefruit spoon, but if you dig a bit into the rind the insides come out really easily with a regular spoon as well. PS We’ve had some issues with them floating faces up, you can carve a couple faces, one on each side, or even a face on the bottom where many of them want turn over to while floating.

4. Don’t forget to add some dry ice right before your guests come!

Some dry ice tips: You can pick up dry ice at some gas stations, but you might need to call around. Try doing a Yelp search for ‘dry ice’ in your neighborhood. Once you pick it up, you’ll want to use it within 24 hours (but putting it in the freezer isn’t a great idea). When you handle it, be careful. Don’t ingest it, and avoid touching it with your bare hands. If you have a lot of young guests at your party, it’s best to leave in one or two large chunk in the punch bowl to be safe, and avoid smaller pieces that might end up in cups.  If you have all adults, a small piece of dry ice in cups might be a nice effect especially for spooky cocktails. Just be sure everyone knows not to digest it.

The dry ice will continue to fog for about a while, depending on how large the piece is. Just to give you an idea, for this shoot the piece we used was about 3 inches long and an inch thick. So pretty small and it continued to fog for at least 40 minutes.  You can continue to add more dry ice to the punch if it stops fogging. More tips here.
