This time of year, I love a good busy activity for the kids when I’m swamped working on my own long to-do list. This craft is really sweet and doubles as a gift as well. We filled it up with packets of hot cocoa and little bags of marshmallows, but any pair of gifts that go well together works fine. A great neighbor or teacher gift!
Sewing Mittens Kid Craft
Here's how to make them
Materials
- 1. Felt
- 2. String
- 3. Leather hole puncher (great for adding holes in your belts as well)
- 4. Scissors
- 5. Fabri-Tac glue or hot glue
Step 1
- 1. Draw a simple mitten shape with chalk. You’ll need four pieces for each pair of mittens.
- 2. Cut out the shapes.
STEP 2
- 1. Using the leather hole puncher, add holes every inch or two around the edges, but not at the bottom where the hand comes in.
STEP 3
- 1. Grab a small bit of tape and attach it to the end of the string.
- 2. Now it’s time to have your little one practice their sewing skills! Have them go all the way around to the other side and then make a knot.
- 3. Do the same with the other mitten, and attach a small piece of string between the two to attach them together.
STEP 4
- 1. Now time to add some trim! We loved this furry trim we found at the fabric story. Simple cut to size and have your child glue on with Fabri-Tac glue (a great alternative to hot glue for felt).
Time to fill!
- 1. Pour hot cocoa mix into one little plastic bag and tie with string. Add mini marshmallows into another, tie with string as well.
Time to Gift!
- 1. Place your gifts in the mittens and gift to your friend, teacher, or neighbor for the holidays.
There are so many fun variations you can make with this same craft. Try a different shape, have fun with felt colors, trimmings, decoration, and the gifts inside!
This is such a fun and easy project! And Perfect for neighbor gifts!
