We’re doing another messy kid project today! Sometime I feel a little guilty raising kids in the city when they don’t get a lot of unstructured outdoor time so we make up for it by creating big messes in the kitchen. Today we’re making some rainbow foam, here’s how it went…

To begin with, we used some Seventh Generation Natural Dish Soap in the lovely lavender scent. We also used food coloring, water, and a bit of cornstarch.

To make the foam, mix equal parts water and dish soap in a blender with a few drops of food colors and cornstarch. We used about 1/2 cup water, 1/2 cup dish soap, 3-4 drops of food coloring, and 1 T of cornstarch (doesn’t have to be exact).

Pour onto a tray or bin and place on the ground where your child can reach it. The cornstarch makes the bubbles last longer so they won’t deflate so quickly. It did the trick!

Edie was a little timid at first. She’s always like this with messy projects: skeptical that we’re really letting her make a mess! A sign we need to do messy projects I think.  We put some spoons in there for her to find and eventually she got the hang of it. I love how the colors looked swirled around but really there’s no right or wrong thing to do with this pretty rainbow foam!

We had her just in a diaper to make clean up easy. Since she was about 6 months old we’ve used Seventh Generation Free and Clear Natural Diapers.  They’re not only free of latex, fragrances, patterns, but also cartoon characters (hooray!). We love to let Edie play in her diaper for messy projects since it makes clean up a breeze.

After playing for a bit, she started getting tired so we did a little clean up.

To wash her hands afterwards we use some Seventh Generation Hand Soap that comes in lots of great scents. Their hand wash has no dyes, no synthetic fragrances, no triclosan, no phthalates or other things I can’t pronounce. Just a gentle, plant-based formula that’s perfect for sensitive baby skin.
