Secrets of Stylish Say Yes Moms: Sara

stylishmoms-sara-01

Now that the holidays are over I’m excited to pick back up on our Secrets of  Stylish Moms series! Over the next three weeks I will featuring some members of the Say Yes team as our stylish moms. I did some intros a couple months ago here, and shared our workspace tour here if you’d like to get caught up a bit.  I feel lucky to work with such creative, smart, and fun people which makes working that much more enjoyable.

Today we’re starting with Sara. Sara and her twin sister have a lovely blog called Alice and Lois. She’s been my assistant for almost a year now and I don’t know what I would do without her. She’s an expert crafter, has a great business sense, and is more of a perfectionist that I am which I need since I tend to try and rush through stuff. She’s kind and funny and calls me out when I need it. She’s become a dear friend and is also the mother to the most darling 7 year old you will ever meet, Harper, that you might remember her from this post with GAP. A couple other fun facts about Sara: Before Say Yes, Sara with GAP corporate for 16 years here in San Francisco so she’s been around fashion a long, long time and she’s turning 40 in a couple weeks but you’d never guess it. Are you excited to find out her style secrets? Sara-2

Sara, tell us about this look!

The outfit I have on is a go-to! The dress is a t-shirt style, cotton and so easy to wear. This jean jacket I have had for years! It even has a little stretch for comfort. Ok, these booties are amazing. Not only are they stylish but they are so… comfortable! As a mama, many days my outfits consist of items that are easy and functional, not as focused on what is super fashionable. I want to be comfortable to run around the park, chase after my girl on her scooter or not worry if paint gets on my jeans! I tend to gravitate towards natural fibers for comfort and feel.

What is one favorite piece in your wardrobe that is both practical for a mother and stylish?

The perfect pair of skinny jeans can make the outfit. Throw on some cute booties and a cute sweater and voila, looking and feeling good!

What is something you do for yourself everyday?

Life is so crazy with kids, family, work, etc. Something I do for myself everyday (or at least try to everyday) is take a walk by myself. During this walk I use it as time to reflect to think about everything I am grateful for. Life can get so busy and demanding that it is important to take a step back to reflect on the positive.

For moms on a mission to rebuild their wardrobe, what are 5 staple pieces you’d recommend?

My uniform consists of the following: jeans (my go-to jeans with holes in the knees), longer fitting long sleeve t-shirts or button down shirts, winter in the city calls for a thin down vest (pockets are a MUST), scarf to dress up the plain t-shirt and my comfy booties!

What beauty product can you not live without, and why is it your favorite?

My under eye cream! Origins Gin Zing is the bomb! Put this under your eyes ever morning and those tired dark and puffy mama eyes are gone!

Do you have a beauty regimen you swear by?

My beauty regimen is more health regimen – I drink a big mug of hot water with lemon every morning! This ritual helps flush out the toxins and is an excellent way to start your day. I also love using coconut oil as a moisturizer.

Thanks for sending me on a most delightful Kork-ease shopping trip. 🙂 Also I desperately needed that eye cream recommendation. Too much going on and looking tired! Thanks for sharing. Love the mom style columns!

I am so glad to see that this series is back. I have enjoyed reading all the featured mom’s style secrets. I appreciate Sara’s simple and practical style. I also love her beauty regimen of lemon and water; an affordable and easy way to stay healthy and beautiful as a busy mom. Thanks!

I have this dress and love it. I wear it all the time. It is VERY cold in Illinois right now and I have been wearing this dress with a tissue turtlekneck tee and heavy tights with booties. I will say it does run short, but I am 5’10” and have that problem with Madewell often.

I will say I am surprised by the comment that you would not guess she is 40. Not because she does not look great but by my assumption that you think most people who are in their 40s don’t look young, smart, stylish etc based on your comment. Like that is something reserved for the “young” or something. She does look wonderful…and that IS 40.

Oh goodness- no I just meant I think she looks way younger than 40, that’s all! Didn’t mean anything about smart/stylish with the age comment. I think those just improve with age! Almost all of the brilliant, stylish women I know are older than I.

Love this series is back and I agree Sara looks so great. Also, after 16 yrs, does she having any tips for when the best GAP sales?? are hehe heee
