How to Make Your Own Natural Jump Rope

diy jump rope

I love the natural wood and rope used in this project. Such a better looking alternative to those plastic jump ropes in gym class. This would be a great gift for a school aged child or a fun activity to do with children who might be interested in decorating their own (it’s up to you if you want to hide their glittery princess stickers during the process. I won’d judge you either way).

Keep reading to see how we made them…

Supplies:
Wooden dowel cut into about 4 inches pieces
Electric drill with long drill bit
Natural rope (heavier weight is best)- I bought mine sold by the yard from a fabric store
Craft paint
Masking tape

Step 1: Cut your dowel down at a hardware store into about 4-5” inch pieces. Using your electric drill, make a hole down the middle. We used a heavy duty clip attached to the table and some safety goggles as well. You won’t be able to drill it all the way through, so once it’s about half way turn it around and drill the otherside until you feel the resistance give and you know you’ve reached the other end of the hole you’ve drilled. You might end up drilling into and out one side so it’s best to have a few extra pieces on hand.

Step 2: Paint your handles! We used some simple geometric designs with navy paint but you could decorate them any way you’d like.

Step 3: After they’re dry, tape up the end so it’s more secure and use the end of a hanger to poke the taped end through the middle of the handle. It should pop out nicely on the other end.

Step 4: Tie a knot on the other side and trim it down a bit.
