DIY Oversized Wall Photo (for $12)

As I mentioned a couple months ago, we recently moved Edie into Henry’s room and now have a shared space (which has been a real challenge for a 6 yr old boy and a 10 month old girl).  A fun challenge though. There are a few DIY projects in the space that I’ll be sharing with you bit by bit. The first project was the DIY pom pom rug last month (which is still holding up pretty well, FYI).

Today I’m sharing a simple project. Really, more like a budget friendly tip. Creating this blown up image of them from a newborn shoot we did when Edie was just one week old with Rachel Thurston. It only cost us $12 to make, here’s how we did it…kidsprint2

Not rocket science of a DIY but there are things called engineering prints, or an oversized poster you can print through your local FedEx or Kinkos. I’ve seen people print these before and was interested to try it out myself. I was really impressed with the quality, and only $12 for a black and white! I sent the image via their online service, specified the width (50 inches) and it was ready to pick up the next day.

It’s printed on a thin paper so it’s definitely not a permanent piece of art in their room. But that’s what I love about it. We can switch it up for a new image as often as we want. For $12, that’s a really inexpensive way to re-decorate a room and keep the photos on the wall current.

To hang it, again I wanted something simple and easy to replace. I love those old industrial binder clips and found a few I liked on etsy. They have holes through the middle which was perfect to put a large nail through.

A simple project, but one of my favorite parts about the kids room! (Well besides the two cuties that sleep in there…)

Love this! But my nagging question is…Where did YOUR sweater come from??

So pretty! I see these prints all the time, but have never blown one up this big! Definitely going to do it! Looks so great! And Edie is just… perfection.

Love this idea! We did this once for a going away party and had everyone sign the pictures. Fun!

I know you said that is made of very thin paper, but why wouldn’t it last long? If it’s not being touched, and just hanging there, shouldn’t it last for quite a while?

Yeah you’re right it could! Although it’s not protected in a frame and it’s in a kids room that might get pulled on…

This is exactly the idea I have been searching for since we knew we were moving into new house! Love!

Liz, have you considered mounting the picture to a piece of wood with something simple like Mod Podge for a longer lasting piece? I did this with a poster for my son’s room and mod podge’d it to a piece of plywood (put glue on the wood and mounted the poster and then on put glue on top of the poster as well to finish it off) and then screwed simple picture hanging hooks into the back of the plywood and then hung it. It looks turned out great and was still inexpensive!

Great idea if you want a longer lasting piece, I agree! I kind of like the idea of this being so temporary though. Sometimes I get sick of the photos on our walls or I get non-committal in the picking process

I LOVE this idea…we have a giant wall in our playroom/finished basement begging for a piece of large scale art! Also, your daughter is just precious and so adorable!
