Clay Snowmen

Before we dive right in to today’s post, I want to send a huge congratulations Liz, Jared and Henry. There’s nothing like a new addition to the family. Welcome to the world Edie Jean! Now, if I lived closer, I’d show up at Liz’s with a casserole, or, given my track record for burning dinners, carry out.  Since I can’t do that, I came up with a winter craft for the kids.
Both of my kids have really been into clay lately. There’s just something about the tactile nature of clay that kids love. Plus, it’s an easy material to work with. My daughter Ellie is a master at clay pots and masks. Meanwhile, my son Jonah has enjoyed creating characters and various ships and walkers from Star Wars. One of my favorites though, was his recent creation—a clay snowman cyclops named Mr. Snow. The kid has a sense of humor.

Keep reading for the how to…Today’s craft is inspired by Mr. Snow: clay snowmen. They’re something kids can make for play and/or decorations for their room. I also think they’re cute enough to grace the shelves in any room of the house.
You’ll need:
Oven bake clay
Parchment paper
Small twigs
Optional:
Black permanent marker
collage
Step 1: Knead the clay to soften it up.
Step 2: Roll the clay into three different sized balls: big, medium, small.
Step 3: Stack them up just like you would with a real snowman.
Step 4: Add small twigs for arms.
Step 5: Bake according to clay manufacturer’s instructions. We cooked at a low temperature, so the twigs were fine.
Step 6: Let cool.
Optional: Once snowmen are cool to the touch, use a permanent marker to draw on eyes and mouth.

That’s it! In an afternoon, you and the kids can create a collection of snowmen for winter scenes or snow armies. It’s up to you.

These are great! I love this simple and easy craft that all of the kids can handle.

Perfect snowy day activity! And yes – place card holders for our holiday dinner are a wonderful fun idea Jillian!

These are great. They would also be cute to use as name-plates for our Christmas dinner table. I can just see the little snowman branch arms holding up each person’s name!
