I love tree skirts, and thought it would be fun to make my own. I wanted something bright and bold since our tree is very monochromatic (green and gold). I thought a red and white peppermint candy shape would be perfect and very festive. It’s super easy to make and requires very basic sewing skills. When I was taking pictures, my mother suggested it would also make for a pretty actual skirt. And she’s kind of right (she’s right about a lot of things). Would you judge me if I wore my tree skirt at a Christmas party this year smelling like pine needles? I’m highly considering it.

Materials:
Heavy canvas fabric
Scissors
Sewing machine + white thread
Red fabric paint
Masking tape + paint brush
Festive trim
Glue gun
White ribbon
(written instructions below)
Step 1: Draw a huge circle onto heavy canvas fabric. I used my reflector to measure one out (perfect shape!) or you could use an old tree skirt or round tablecloth. Cut it out.
Step 2: Use a plate to cut out the center circle, draw a straight line from the middle circle to the edge and cut.
Step 3: Pin along each edge and sew a simple hem. Or you could glue but I’d recommend sewing if you can.
Step 4: Lay your tree skirt on top of some scrap paper or drop cloth since paint could leak through to the other side. I used the back side of my old rug which has been working great for projects like this!). Tape off where you want to make the red candy stripes.
Step 5: Using a brush, apply red fabric paint to the taped off areas carefully and let dry completely. Then pull the tape off! You’re almost done…
Step 6: Hot glue trim on. You could sew it on but I had a really small edge to sew so I chose to glue which worked great.
Step 7: Cute 4 pieces of 10 inch ribbon and sew two on inner circle edge and two on the outer circle edge as shown above.
Step 8: Tie your tree skirt around your tree!

I am a sucker for all things candy cane striped. Love this! Be sure to store it carefully, so that the paint doesn’t crack. This is a fun thing to do with the kids – they can paint the stripes!
Your mother is totally right – it would make a very festive skirt! 🙂
Haa, I know, right? I’m tempted to give it a try!
So brilliant Liz!
What a great idea! Love the end result- I want to eat it off the page!
