DIY Felted Heart Sweater

I’ve been wanting to buy a felted heart sweater for a while (they’re so cute, don’t you think?), until I found out how easy it was to make one myself using a simple needle felting technique I first talked about in this stocking post. This would make a really great gift for a sister, friend, niece or daughter and only took me about 2 hours to make. I used a $10 sweater from Forever21 and the felt cost me about $4.

(Also, congrats to Clarissa who won the felted stockings giveaway!)

Keep reading to see how to make it…

Supplies: Sweater (wool or cotton), Wool felt, Felting needle, Styrofoam base (comes with most felting kits), Freezer paper, Pen

Instructions:

1. Draw a large heart the size you’d like onto freezer paper (you can buy freezer paper at grocery stores next to the wax paper). You can either fill in the whole heart or make an outline of a heart like I did.

2. Cut out the outline of the heart as shown in the second step above. Keep the inner heart section as well. Iron on both the outside section and the inner section onto your shirt until it’s nice and secure.

3. Follow the instructions on this post for wool needle felting and felt in the heart space exposed. Because it’s a large area, it will take a little while (about an hour), and be sure to spend some time going back over each section and make sure it’s all felting through on the other side.

4. Iron both the front and back. That’s it!

This turned out great. I copied the ubiquitous heart elbow patches last year, and it’s nice to see another really awesome design!

Such a great gift idea, I’ve never felted but now I want to give it a try
