4 DIY Sequin Ideas for New Years Eve (No Sew!)

Sequin pieces are a staple for New Years parties. The problem is they can be really expensive to buy, and you don’t wear a fancy piece like this often so it’s hard to rationalize the purchase. So, we decided to DIY some sequin pieces instead! Below are 4 DIY sequin ideas for your New Years event, and none require a sewing machine or sewing skills. What’s so great about sequins is that they can transform the most boring shirt in your closet into something fancy and fit for a party. I’m tempted to take every item I was going to get rid of and sequin them up into party attire!

A little about sequin fabric first : They are quite a bit more than other fabric you may have used (although nothing compared to buying a sequin piece at the store!). They run about $15-$20 a yard, but you don’t need much to make these projects. My fabulous DIYer, Jann, who worked on these pieces used 1/3 of a yard for the heart, 1/2 a yard for the jacket,  1/4 a yard for the striped shirt, and scraps for the shoe clips.

Another brilliant idea that Jann had was to buy a $10 sequin mini skirt or tank from a store like Forever21 and use the fabric to create your own sequin embellishment. So smart!

1. Sequin Heart Shirt/Sweater:

Use iron on transfer paper to attach the sequin fabric to the clothes (so easy!). Iron the paper onto the back of the sequin fabric first, and then cut out the shape and peel and iron the shape onto your shirt or sweater. That’s it! Just don’t iron directly onto the sequins, it’s best to use a piece of cotton or jersey fabric in between layers so you don’t get glue on your iron or worse- burn your fancy sequins.

Three more DIY Sequin ideas…

2. Sequin Jacket Collar:

Follow the same instructions for the heart shirt above, but since you need a very specific shape for the jacket, so it’s a good idea to use  tracing paper to get the shape you want first. Then tape the tracing paper to the back of the pre- ironed/transfer-papered sequins and cut out the shape.

I love how you can wear it with jeans or dress is up with black skirt and heels.

3. Sequin Striped Shirt:

Iron on transfer paper to the back of your sequin fabric and then cut out simple strips to iron onto a tee. Any old tee (pull one out of your donation pile you were going to get rid of!)

4. Sequin Shoe Clips:
This is an easy DIY project that involves sequin scraps and a glue gun. You may recognize this project from a couple years ago. You can find my full instructions right here. I love how Emily paired these silver sequin shoe clips with a sleek black ensemble.
