DIY Colour Block Cabinet

By craft contributor Rachael of Penelope and Pip

Hi! Rachael from Penelope and Pip here. Today’s DIY is a great way to brighten up your walls and to make sure you have lots of pops of colour in your home to cheer you up all year through.

I am a big fan of being thrifty and remodeling items I already have around the house, so today’s project shows you how to transform a bland wall cabinet you may already have hanging in your bathroom into something pretty (and glittery!).

Firstly, the materials…

1. Spray paints in assorted colours (I used pale pink, pale blue and gold)
2. Glitter tape (I found mine at my local craft store)
3. A cabinet (mine is the Osthamra wall cabinet currently available at Ikea)
4. Painter’s tape
5. Pencil
6. Ruler
7. Drop sheet for the paint over spray
8. Varnish (optional)

Step 1:
If you are using a cabinet from your house, take off the doors. Decide how far apart your stripes will be and rule them off. It is a good idea to make the stripes different sizes. I chose for both my doors to mirror each other, however, you could mix it up and have different stripes the whole way across.

Step 2:
Using your painter’s tape, tape off the middle sections so that you can paint both the ends. This is a neat little time saving trick I worked out!

Step 3:
Spray paint your door using several coats. Make sure you wait for them to dry (this is the hardest part).

Step 4:
Once your ends are fully dry, use the painter’s tape to tape off the ends and paint in the middle. It is really important for those ends to be super, super dry to ensure you don’t rip off the paint when using the tape to section them off. I actually only use a tiny piece of tape along the end and attach paper to the other side of the tape to catch the over spray.

Step 5:
Using your glitter tape, tape some glittered stripes wherever you think they will look pretty. Glitter tape is great as there is no mess, no fuss.

Step 6:
If you are using a new cabinet from Ikea, you will need to assemble it now and put your doors in! My cabinet had been sitting around the house unmade for a while, so it was great to finally get it up on the wall. If you are using a cabinet from around the house, pop your doors back in now once they are fully dry.

You could also add a clear varnish over the doors before this step to ensure they last forever.

Now you have a cabinet with pretty pops of colour and gorgeous glitter to make you smile every day!
