My friend Erin is an Oakland-based designer who spent 15 years in retail marketing before starting her own women’s clothing line, Hygge, starring these amazing denim kimono jackets, and featured in Forbes a couple days ago!.  Today Erin is sharing a few of her style secrets with us as a super stylish mama of two…

How would you describe your personal style and has it changed in anyway since becoming a mother…

My style tends to be fairly minimal, often monochromatic and with exaggerated proportions — lots of black, gray & white. Since becoming a mother, my style has generally become more confident and consistent – probably just a natural result of getting older and (I hope) wiser.

Do you think being a parent inspired you in anyway to design this new clothing line? 

Yes definitely. I wanted to show my children – especially my daughter – what it looks like to be brave and take risks, do something you love and not be afraid to ask for help, possibly fail, or worry about what other people think.

What is one favorite piece in your wardrobe that is both practical for a mother and stylish?

I’m obsessed with shirt dresses. I own several and we just designed one for Hygge that I’m super excited about. I wear them constantly layered over pants, under shirts and open, as a light jacket, Oddly, I almost never wear them buttoned up alone as a dress, but I think they’re endlessly useful, super stylish and flattering to so many body types.

What beauty product can you not live without, and why is it your favorite?

My eyelashes are super blonde, so unless I’m looking to go full-Tilda, mascara is my desert island makeup must-have. I’ve been wearing Maybelline’s Great Lash Mascara since high-school.

favorite comfy boot: I’ve had a pair of lace-up black boots similar to these for years that have been staples – they’re so old and well-loved I can’t read the brand on them anymore!

old reliable pair of jeans: vintage Levi’s 517’s (high-waisted bootcut flares); I get them from the denim goddesses at Slash

band on permanent rotation in your spotify: I’ve had a fairly serious girl crush on Courtney Barnett for a while; we’ll see if it’s permanent, but it’s definitely long-term.

favorite place to vacation: driving: Indian Springs; flying: just got back from a trip to Berlin & can’t wait to go back!
