Experience Gifts

I love giving experience gifts to reduce clutter in the home. Things like a museum membership, gift card to a favorite restaurant, theatre tickets, etc. A new experience that you know they’ll enjoy. It feels special, thoughtful, and doesn’t take up space in a closet. Today we’re partnering with Uber Gift Cards to explore a new spot for us: the Chabot Space and Science Center up in the Oakland hills. Edie, Dot and I headed there on a rainy day last week…

An Uber Gift Card is a great compliment to an experience gift to get them there and back safely. Maybe it’s a sister that travels a lot to and from airports, maybe it’s a family in the city that loves to explore but doesn’t own a car. Or a couple that loves to go out to dinner and wants a safe ride home. You can buy the gift cards online here, or also in stores like Amazon, Walmat, and Target. We used $25 to get to and from the museum, and had an extra $10 on our card to visit our favorite burrito spot on the way home.

The Chabot Space and Science Center is tucked up in the hills by our home in Oakland. Henry came here on a school trip last spring and raved about it. So Edie and Dot and I were excited to check it out! Every first Friday is $5 admission. We want to come back and check out the telescopes at night, and there’s a fun balloon drop for all ages on New Years Eve!

There were a lot of really interesting exhibits. Some were a bit over Edie’s head but I think she still understood a lot. Spaceships are not a new concept to her (she’s watched her share of Little Einsteins), although an astronaut was unfamiliar. “They go to play in the snow??” she asked when seeing a huge suit displayed. Something like that!

The architecture of the building was just beautiful! I couldn’t get enough of these gorgeous windows  that overlooked the forested property. It’s in such an incredible spot, all secluded and tucked away up in the Oakland Hills.

We were quickly directed to the Discovery room, which was geared towards younger kids. They had some really cool hands on things to explore like this ball run above, a spaceship below, big chalkboards to draw on, blocks, and other fun toys to build and construct with.

A fun way to spend a rainy day in Oakland. Next time we’ll bring Henry along and make time for the Planetarium show!
