A week of Games

CVSgamenight6

A few years ago we tried a new structure for family goals. Instead of doing huge goals we tried to do small, experimental things for just a week like eating vegetarian, going to bed before 10pm, or going on a hike every evening. The idea was to do something for just a week as a kind of test to break out of habits. A few weeks ago we realized we were spending almost every evening in front of the tv. So, for a goal we tried to instead, play a different card or board game every night as a family. I wanted to teach Henry and Edie some new games and have some more quality family time after a long day of work. Here’s how it went…

Of course, you need lots of delicious snacks for a family game night. The CVS brand snacks called Gold Emblem and Gold Emblem Abound are super convenient since they’re at your local CVS and you don’t have to make a separate trip when you already need baby tylenol and shampoo. With all kinds of delicious and healthy snacks from dried apples and granola bars to beef jerky and nut mixes, there’s something for everyone. The classic light popcorn is Henry’s favorite, and the banana crips are Edie’s favorite. I keep on finding new Gold Emblem snacks I love like the blueberry lemon almond crunch and the quinoa jalapeno cheese puffs.

In celebration of the Olympic games coming up (so excited!!), we took things up a notch and had a little family game night tournament with first, second, and third place winners. Amazing how much a little competition can make things more exciting.  We had a modified bracket system where the winners kept playing each other.

In the spirit of Olympic competition, we ranked our Gold Emblem snacks in first, second, and third choices too. The baked bbq puffs came in first, the lemon blueberry almonds second, and the light popcorn third. Although Jared and I would have picked the blueberry lemon almond crunch as first. So good!

Some of our favorite games to play as a family are Ticket to Ride, UNO, Battleship, Monopoly, and LIFE. Edie loves this Hi Ho Cherry O. It’s so simple but perfect for her age where they just have to fill their cherry bucket from the tree by spinning a dial. During this game week we learned Skip Bo! A favorite of mine growing up that Henry loved.  It had been so long that I had to look up the rules online. One of those moments where you wonder what you did before the internet and you lost the game sheet instruction. Would you have to call your uncle? Or ask a neighbor?

First place in the UNO tournament goes to Henry!

This girl. She didn’t even mind she got 2nd place! In all honestly, she just thought it was a necklace.

What games do you like to play with kids?

Pie Face is hilarious! The kids and adults loved it. It might be too old for Edie but Henry might love it. We played it at my son’s 6th birthday party. The game includes a sponge but we played with whipped cream instead and even the kid who I thought would freak out because she hates being dirty LOVED it!

Just played Monopoly ALL of Sunday afternoon with my son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter. We were thinking we need to get LIFE…
