Easy Blanket Fort

A couple weeks ago Henry’s cousins came out to visit for spring break. Every night they had a sleepover down in our family room watching movies, having pillow fights, and eating snacks. Kid heaven! When his cousins left Henry said, “Life is boring without Gigi and Augie”. And I had to agree, regular life is not nearly as fun without those two cuties. One day we built a fort with only string and a few blankets and pillows in partnership with Birch Lane and their new kids line of bedding, rugs, furniture, and other accessories for kids 3-8. The line is an updated take on traditional kid styles, includes more than 600 new items (!) with great price points.

Here are a few photos of how we put our fort together…

One thing that’s really nice about our new family room is all the space we have to store toys. Before we had to keep all the kids toys in either their shared + and crowded room, or in the living room which then became hard to host adult parties when it was lined with plastic toys. But now we can have most of the kid toys downstairs in the family room where they can make a huge mess and run wild. The white storage bin above is a piece from Birch and Lane that I love. It’s easy for even young kids, like Edie, to pull out and put back toys and it doubles as a nice bench. Above we also have the Birch Lane Felix black and white pouf, and this blue soft rug.

Step one in making our fort was securing some rope to the bookshelf on one side, and securing the other side to the window. Make it high and tight. The blankets hanging over will weight it down considerably.

Step two was hanging a blanket on top. Then we tied string on each side up towards another window or a nail on the wall to give it some shape. We used this Birch Lane Dillion Striped Quilt which was soft but not too heavy.

Step three was using a pouf (like this huge Birch Lane Felix one) or ottoman on one side to give it added shape and comfort.

Now it’s time to throw down some blankets and pillows! We used the Birch Lane Briana Striped Throw and Jordan Cable Knit Throw for blankets and the Birch Lane Carson Linen Pillow Cover and Samara Velvet Pillow Cover (my favorite, so soft!)

Of course now, every blanket fort starts with a pillow fight…

…and then a tickle fight!
