A few days ago, Henry and I had a fun afternoon trying out an activity box for kids called Know Yourself. It’s an engaging adventure that arrives monthly with comic books, science experiments, recipes, and history lessons to help children learn about their body and mind. Here’s how it went…
We were sent the first box: Adventure Series Part 1. It’s all about Ancient Greece and exploring our senses. There were Greek recipes, history lessons about Ancient Greece, sensory tools like a magnifying glass and slime, and fun science experiments all about our body’s senses. After checking out the comic book and world map, we were ready to start the sensory lessons…
The first experiment was with our sense of smell. I placed a bunch of fragrant items into the vials they had included in the box when. I picked pine needles, orange peels, chocolate, cinnamon, apples, and candy canes.
Henry was blindfolded and handed one vial at a time to open. I assured him they were all good scents! He had to guess what the scent was and write his guess down on a piece of paper.
He got all of them right except the orange peels he guessed were perfume, and the milk chocolate he guessed was ‘gross dark chocolate’ (we counted that as correct).
Next, we did an experiment about our sense of touch. We filled up three glasses of water: one cold, one hot, and one room temperature. He held one hand each on the cold and hot glasses for one minute.
When the minute was up, he then grabbed the room temperature glass with both hands. Each hand sensed the temperature of the glass differently as they had become numbed by the extreme temperature. It felt colder to the hand that had been holding the hot glass, and hotter to the hand that had been holding the cold glass.
I tried it as well after he was finished. Each side of the glass really did feel different!
We had so much fun exploring the first Know Yourself box. I love how engaging and varied the experiences are and great for kids of all ages. Edie even sniffed the vials (and then immediately wanted to eat the candy canes). I love the idea of this subscription box as a holiday gift. It makes something fun for kids to look forward to and a great learning activity for the whole family as well.
