5 Tips for Organizing Baby’s Changing Area

mustela

I’m working with Mustela today to talk about organizing baby’s changing area today.  When Mustela contacted me about working together on a few posts I was thrilled because we’ve been huge fans since I was gifted a Mustela lotion at Edie’s baby shower. My friend who gave me this gift I consider the baby whisperer because she always knows exactly what to do with babies (do you have a friend like that too?). It doesn’t help of course that she’s in the health care profession as well.  Anyway, in the note with her gift my friend told me that this French brand, Mustela, was her secret. It was her absolute favorite, although I was surprised I had never heard of it! Now we’ve become big fans of Mustela as well and I love to give new mom Mustela products too.

Because Edie shares a small room with Henry, there’s limited space so I have to be very deliberate and organized about everything. Her changing pad is secured on top of their shared dresser and we hung this simple white shelf (above) into the room as well to keep all of her small care items, and a few of her cute little shoes and hats we well. Here are 5 tips to organize your own baby changing area.  I’d love to hear your ideas as well!

1. Have baby care items handy and display in pretty jars, like these white enamel ones. We display our pretty lotions and creams as well, like the Mustela PhysiObebe (cleaning solution for diaper changes), and the Hydra Bebe Body Lotion (the smell is amazing).

For a while we kept baby’s care items (like a comb, finger clippers, baby medicine) in the bathroom with the other family’s items but I found that I liked them right close and in reach to the changing area.

2. The second tip is covering your wipes container with a simple piece of fabric and glue. The patterns are always such an eye sore on those wipes containers so I like to cover it. If you use a hard case like this one below, you can re-fill it and won’t need to keep buying more cases. You only need to buy and cover one. I think it’s worth it.

3. Hang and display those adorable baby shoes and hats. They only stay cute for so long, might as well put them front and center!

4. You don’t need a changing table. You can secure your changing pad on any surface. I’ve always used the top of a dresser to put the changing pad on. It comes with small nails you can secure to the back so it can’t slip off. That way, you can free lots of space in the room.

5. Take things out of their original packaging whenever possible (like the diapers here below). It saves space and looks so much better when things are neatly stacked.

I love mustela’s foam shampoo for newborns and the physiobebe for difficult diaper changes. The shampoo completely removes cradle cap. I only give my babe a bath about twice a week and it still works. Amazing!

99% Mustela for my 2 boys (3 1/2 & 2 yo) since they were born!
(I’m french so it’s easier, I guess, & we don’t use baby wipes except the face wipes)
You should try the “hydra stick”… always in my purse.

PS : The 1% is for Cadum Oil massage

I use Mustela for my babe too — it’s the best! Our favourites are the face cream (that yummy smell on her face = nom nom cheeks) and the barrier cream. Love that the barrier cream doesn’t come in a tub or a tube! I also love the facial wipes (again for yummy face smell) but buying a separate kind of wipe is too spendy.

A mirror on the wall next to the change mat – we actually had a full length one standing so just the top came out above the table and couldn’t be pulled off the wall – and baby loved loved loved to stare at himself while being changed. No rolling off the table, no wiggling away, just one narcissistic and well entertained small person!

We had a mirror alongside the change table for our two oldest kids and it was fantastic. They loved to stare at themselves and it distracted them long enough to make diaper changes a breeze. The mirror was part of a built in wall unit (I had a change mat set up on top of a built in dressing table) so I never had to worry about it falling down.

I saw that someone mentioned on your instagram pic that Mustela have changed the fragrance and that it looks like you’ve got the old bottle with the original and nicer fragrance. I use Hydra Bebe on my 10 month old and the bottle definitely has a different label to yours (mine has a big NEW label like the PhysiObebe in your pic). When I bought it on Sephora a while back there were a lot of comments about the fragrance changing. I was really hoping that it would smell just like the 2 in 1 hair and body wash (which smells so good I just want to eat my little one after bath time!) but alas it has a completely different smell. That said, it still smells really good, and it’s the fastest absorbing baby lotion I’ve ever tried so I plan to keep on using it for years to come. My big kids love to use it as well 🙂

I really need to get a shelf to store all of the change table necessities. Right now they sit in a gap along side the change mat but my little one takes great pleasure in throwing each and every cream, powder and lotion onto the ground as I change her! That shelf you have would be perfect. Do you mind sharing where you got it from? I’m thinking of maybe mounting a Boon Stash organiser on the wall, but a shelf like this would be a little more practical. Thanks 🙂

That shelf looks a lot like the wall rack with hooks from Land of Nod.

My friend has these products and loves them too! I need to try them out

What diaper brand do you use?
Are Mustela products mostly fragrance free?
I love the idea of covering the boxes with some type of frabric. The changing area looks super cute yet still comfortable with everything in arms reach.

I use seventh generation diapers and love them. The Mustela products are fragranced, at least the ones I’ve used are! They’re really fresh and light smelling.
