This is a fun activity I think we’ll be repeating a lot. Have you ever tried this with your kids? It’s a lot of fun, the colors and movement are beautiful! I’ll have to catch it on video next time around.

Leiah, it has to be whole milk, not water, as the dish soap is acting on the fat. This is the "science" part 🙂
instead of dropping dishsoap in you can dip the tip of a toothpick in the soap and then in the milk/foodcoloring. It makes it feel more magical:) and it gives a little more control.
I did this a while back when I had a 9-year old girl for a guest and we got snowed in. It was fun, I asked her first if she liked science experiments and she said yes so we tried it.

You can't really drink the milk after dropping in dish soap! But maybe this could work with water in a white dish? That way you're only "wasting" food coloring and a few drops of soap 🙂
Certainly a different way to see colors mix together… and not wasteful… can drink the milk when finished the project. Fun project!

Love this. The colors are gorgeous! What a fun activity to do together! I also saw it over on Modern Parents Messy Kids a few weeks ago. Once they were done, they used the colored milk for painting.

We love milk art! It's hard to describe in words just how the colors dance around. My son even decided to have a Mad Sciencist birthday party so he could show his friends this cool trick. 🙂

i thought food coloring in milk was just to get the kid to drink the milk. you know, because blue or green milk is WAY tastier.this does look like fun though!
