Backcountry Skiing in June

This past weekend I ventured out with Jared on an alpine touring ski trip in the Sierras. They’ve had the largest snow fall in record and there is still plenty of skiing to do in the back country this late in the season.

Alpine touring skis have removable furry ‘skins’ on the bottoms that give you grip so you can climb up. The heels release as well for added movement. Then skins come off and heels lock down when it’s time to go downhill. Jared did a huge trip across the Swiss Alps doing alpine touring here.

After hiking for a few hours, we set up camp at the base of the mountain protected from the wind between some rocks and enjoyed the most beautiful sunset. We spent a lot of time staring at the mountain behind us and planning our route we’d take up the next morning. Jared has given me permission to call it our base camp so we spent way too long thinking up our base camp name: high quarry base camp 4 extreme.

It was my first time snow camping but surprisingly, it wasn’t very extreme or cold at all. I was super cozy in the tent and bag. We cooked dinner and boiled some snow to re-fill our water bottles.

When we woke up the next morning we make hot cocoa and oatmeal and started up the peak.

One section was a really steep climb up. We did kick turns on our skis, back and forth up the steepest part of the slope, the same way you would if you were hiking.

The view from the top was incredible. We had to take off our skis to hike up the last rock section. We could see up to Lake Tahoe and all the way down to Yosemite. We downhill skied back to high quarry base camp 4 extreme and then packed up and headed out. Crazy but a whole lot of fun.

That trip looks amazing! I've never really done anything like that, but my husband would love me like crazy if I did. (if only we lived near family so I could get an overnight babysitter for my little guy!)

My husband is a backcountry NUT and also went out this weekend. I for one, have called off skiing and headed straight into summer.

michelle, it was very cozy but guess what i'm doing this weekend. taking a nap.

Wow, who would have thought there would still be snow. How fun! Great pictures too =)- Sarahhttp://agirlintransit.blogspot.com/

Believe it or not I have never been camping even though I love the outdoors! I live close to the appalachians in GA and it will be 80 degrees at the base and snowing at top! Crazy!Looks like a wonderful adventure!
