The Great Diaper Swap

diapering7

As I mentioned before, I’m working on a few challenges with Made to Matter, Handpicked by Target™  to challenge myself to try natural, organic products for taking care of baby. Today we’re focusing on diapering. The challenge has been to use Seventh Generation organic diapers and wipes for two weeks.

Until this point I’ve always used a non-natural diaper. We started using them when Henry was a newborn and the smell has just become nostalgic for me. When I was setting up Edie’s nursery and I opened up the first pack of diapers, the smell instantly brought me back to Henry’s sweet newborn stage. Amazing how powerful those scent connections can be!

I’ve been reading up a little on the effects chemicals and toxins have on babies, whose immune systems aren’t as developed and who have less ability than adults do of eliminating those toxins. So for two weeks, I packed away our old reliable diapers and exchanged them for the Seventh Generation brand. I was a little skeptical, here’s how it went…

I’ve seen these diapers before but was hesitant that an all natural diaper with no dyes, fragrance, latex, etc could do what diapers need to do best: stop leaks. They seemed a little hippie for me. I’ve always been attracted to the natural plain color- no characters or bright colors. Starting off, I loved that most: a clean slate!

For two weeks we used Seventh Generation diapers exclusively. And….we’re still using them! They work just as well as the old ones we’ve always used, and the natural plain color and lack of dyes and fragrances is a major bonus. Enough that I think we’re making the move permanently to this diaper. I did miss the old diapers smell at first, but then realized that babies smell delicious enough without those artificial fragrances from their diapers.

What diapers do you use? Have you tried Seventh Generation? Does a natural diaper without dyes or fragrances seem attractive to you? Would you consider a diaper swap as well?

We use cloth diapers at home for our little guy and at daycare we use Bambo Nature which are absolutely amazing because they carry the Nordic-Swan Eco label. No chlorine, no dyes, heavy metals, phthalate a, brightners, glues..also no substances harmful to env. ..I can go on and on..great product but a bit expensive though. Second choices are Earths Best and Seventh generation..

I thought I was the only parent out there looking for the best organic products. Since we did have a baby shower my husband and I got showered with many different diapers. But non were earth friendly; of course they are tad more expensive than your traditional brand. I did get some that smelled just like baby powder and my goodness the smell had me so dizzy and nauseas. I have yet to try seventh generation diapers but there on the bottom of my earth friendly diapers with my sisters testimonial. When my sister had her first baby; me super auntie went to get her SG diapers and she did not like them at all. She mentioned it was a waste of money! But I’m talking four years ago. I’m still doing my homework. I am a member with the honest company for three months and yes like everyone else the diapers are adorable. I haven’t had my downs on them at all. But again I’m doing my homework. I’m trying right now babyganics for this month and I have no regrets and they are less expensive than honest company. So I’ll see how it goes.

We cloth diaper! But when we’re on vacation or out of town for extended periods of time we use Seventh Generation, Earth’s Best, or Honest diapers 🙂

We love Honest Company diapers. No chemicals, super cute clean patterns. 7th Generation are the alternate choice and I love them just as much.

We use Cloth, We even make our own sometimes (pocket, fitted, and covers). My wife uses baby washcloths with a home mode solution for wipes and it works great. 3rd kid going on 10 months.

I’m super sensitive to smell (we came home with pampers from the hospital and i had to throw them out because it gave me a headache!) and lo’ and behold, my daughter has super sensitive skin. diaper rash on week 1.5. we switched to seventh generation and haven’t looked back since. there’s other companies that make similar products but none at the same price point as sg. love them.

Great challenge ! I’m a big fan of seventh generation too and didn’t know Burts Bees made so many diapering products. Great companies !

To me, organic, natural, and non-GMO go hand in hand. It is a lifestyle, not just a label. Burt’s Bees, although natural, is against GMO labeling and has donated money to prevent labeling of GMO products. To me, this company is not on the same level with other natural and organic companies that live and breathe truly natural and organic. I would advise to go with another company. Do your homework!

Yes! I love the Seventh Generation diapers. I’m a hardcore up and up fan, but our babe had had a horrible rash since she came out, so I finally tried homemade wipes and these diapers. Cleared up within two days. Crazy. I adore the natural color!

Hi Liz, I’ve followed you thru your fertility ups and downs at the same time I was having my own infertility issues. Edie is beautiful!!!! I now have a 1.5 yr old and we’ve used Honest Company diapers for the past 6 months and I love, love, LOVE them. You can get plain white ones or patterns. I would highly recommend Honest Company’s completely safe, natural, organic baby care products as well. We use their shampoo, conditioner, dryer sheets, house cleaning products, etc. Plus they do do an easy monthly shipment “bundle” each month for diapers and all other products. I also use and really like Seventh Generation products, but I thought I’d give a shout out to Honest Company as well – they’re really good products 🙂

Glad to see you’re loving these! We cloth diaper but still use a disposable here and there and seventh generation is our go to brand. We also use their wipes, dish soap, laundry detergent and cleaning solution and love those as well. When we had Elsie I really thought buying as much natural stuff as possible was the way to go and 8 months in I’m glad we made that choice!

wow, a dedicated fan! i haven’t ever tried their laundry detergent. I’ve been a Method detergent girl for a while now (another Made to Mater natural brand!)

I love seventh generation diapers. We mostly use cloth diapers but for times when we need disposables seventh generation is what we use. I actually think that their leak protection is superior to pampers.

good to hear you’ve had a good experience with them too. cloth diapers is a whole other level for me, never tried that

Now this is a great swap! I love seventh generation diapers and to answer lauren’s question ( If you don’t mind) I think they work just as good as the regular diapers!

I’ve been scared of using these natural diapers too. I just want them to work as well as our old pampers. Do they really?

I really have loved them and they seem to work just as good. We haven’t bought a pack of pampers since I made the switch last month! I think we’re lifelong converts to seventh generation now

I think we had a very similar experience! I started loving huggies for the smell and then now all we do is seventh generation. i love them. they’re so soft and i love no characters
