Trend Crush: Birkenstocks for Fall

By fashion editor Ashley

birkenstocks

Lately my instagram has been blowing up with posts of Birkenstocks the last few weeks, like this picture from Natalie of Hey Natalie Jean (formally Nat the Fat Rat) and this picture of PINK Birkenstocks by Emma of Emmadime. Or did you see this post by Liz’s sister in law Gabrielle of Design Mom? I never wore Birkenstocks the first time around so I’m going in with a pretty open mind. After a few weeks I think I am officialy at “crush” status. One of my favorite things about them is, even though they are technically a sandal they make a smooth transition right into fall and fall fashion, plus they are slip ons!

How do you feel about Birkenstocks? Are you on board?

I will be honest, I am not a fan of Birkenstocks, they aren’t suited to the shape of my feet and take a while to “wear in” but I think on small slender feet they look great!

When it comes to Birckenstocks I’m always on board! Most comfortable, yet stylish sandals ever. It takes awhile for them to adjust to your feet, but when they do it’s like you’re walking on little clouds.

Ugg. I just hate them. I think they are so ugly and sloppy-looking. Not to mention, every 60-something hippie never stopped wearing them. Even though cool/hip people are bringing them back into fashion, I just don’t want to be wearing something that I know my tie-dyed shirt wearing, great-aunt owns. Yes, they are comfortable, but so are the many stylish wedges and flats on the market. AVOID!

I have this theory that if you wore trends the first time around you aren’t as into them the second time around. At least this has been true for me–I find that I’m not as into 80’s inspired fashion. Additionally having worn birkenstocks back in the day (even with my homecoming dress *eye roll* what was I thinking?) I’m just not as into them this time around. Of course I was wearing them in a pseudo-hippie sort of way, so seeing them styled like this would make them more attractive to me now. And they are super comfy in my opinion.

i think i hate birkenstocks. but i can’t decide. but I think I hate them. They remind me of hospital shoes or something weird. They can be styled so cute though!

I prefer Mephistos to Birkenstocks, but even then, I can really only wear them during warm months. My toes get super cold!!

I have no objections to the aesthetics of Birkenstocks and I love the way they’re styled in these pictures but I just find the shoes to be stupidly uncomfortable so I’m out.
