In a culture of social media, home decor inspiration is super easy to find, but also infinite and a bit overwhelming. How do you find your personal decorating style? Today we’re partnering with Barn and Willow who makes high quality, custom window treatments to chat about it…
What’s your gut style when it comes to decorating? I would say my style is a mix of old and new neutrals, with some personal DIY touches and small pops of color. I avoid too much new stuff, it feels sterile and unrealistic to decorate an entire room from scratch. Who has that kind of cash lying around? I’m drawn to classic vintage (especially French) and being in Northern California for 10 yrs my decorating style now has a healthy dose of boho vibes mixed in.
I’m also somewhat drawn to mid century (especially if I’m buying anything new), and Danish design as well. One of my favorite pieces is the vintage mid century Danish rocker in this space which combines three of my favorite styles into one beautiful, timeless piece. Sometimes when I’m on pinterest or instagram I get sidetracked from my gut style seeing brilliant uses of color and ultra-modern homes. There are so many incredible spaces out there and talented designers, but much of it wouldn’t work for our space or our family.
To fit into my old mixed with new decorating style, there were a few things to consider for the girls room:
First, our home is nestled a bit on the trees and so light is crucial. Also, I’m a bit boring when it comes to color. I tend to focus on neutrals and then add in pops here and there. I knew I wanted drapes in a light color.
Second, Dot still has an afternoon nap so we needed a way to block out the light at times. Interlining was a great option here, which is a layer of blackout lining and a layer of privacy lining that provides additional sun block and insulation. The insulation was a great selling point too since my studio is right beneath, and we’ve removed the insulation out of the ceiling on top o the studio so it does tend to be a little chilly here.
Third, timeless quality. I’m ready for drapes that are classically beautiful, and won’t be out of style next year. This fabric is perfect for a nursery too. The 100% Organic Cotton fabric is GOTS certified and just stunning in person.
I picked out three 5×5 free sample swatches (with the lining options too). From those, I was able to test it out and compare different options. I ended up picking the 100% Organic Cotton in Ivory, a 2 pinch pleat, interlining, in two 50″ x 84″ panels.
I also love adding little personal trinkets from travel into spaces, like the yellow lion and basket here from Mexico, and the little white porcelain houses from Germany. I do a lot of travel writing for my content here, which means often traveling without the family. My mom guilt always get kicked in high gear when I’m gone and I end up coming home with a suitcase full of gifts and trinkets.
I’m really loving how their room is coming together. Decorating is such an ongoing process with changing needs and growing kids. But, even as they grow these gorgeous Barn and Willow drapes will stay beautifully classic. I love how they elevate the room and make it that much more cozy. Next in here, I can’t wait to finish the hardwood floors (working on that the end of this week!) and possibly a bunkbed too. Still blows my mind how quickly my kids are growing up.
What’s your decorating style? What projects are you working on in your home right now?
Thanks to Barn and Willow for sponsoring this post and making beautiful window treatments our family loves. Also, find out more about our home and my decorating style in the interview on their site today. Thanks to my friend Benedicte for helping me with the photos! I always learn and grow so much working with other photographers.
It’s taken me a few years post-marriage to figure out my decorating style. Once I stopped trying to please my husband, because he honestly tends to like our space if I’m happy, I figured out what makes me happy. Color, whimsical, simple, old & new, functional, & kid-friendly. We’re currently figuring out how to have 3 kids in one room and make our livingroom our “master bedroom.”
