Some of the most memorable books from my childhood were the ones that were creepy and scary. As Halloween is fast approaching, I’ve compiled a list of favorite Halloween books for kids, with a separate list for older kids, that will celebrate the season with goosebumps, giggles and gasps.
25 Halloween Books for Kids
Spooky Picture Books for All Kids
Spooky Chapter Books for Kids ages 7 and up
Do you have any favorites that you or your kids love? Any spooky stories that stand-out from childhood?
Happy reading and have a spooky Halloween!
Very nice list of books! I definitely read them to my child. By the way, as I’m a student, I often use the Essayontime platform to get some help with assignments. So, I can say that here https://essayontime.com.au/assignment-help-brisbane I also can find a good content for child development. I think that it can be helpful for others.
We like Zen Ghosts by Jon J. Muth and the Franklin audio story about his Halloween adventures. We recently found a fairy book in the free book box that my daughter wants to read called Trixie the Halloween Fairy. Hope it is enjoyable since its a longish chapter story.
When I was a kid I loved the story Gus Was a Friendly Ghost. I remember it so well.
I read The Dark to my 5th graders when we learned about tone and mood in literature. They loved it (also my eerie voice I used) and probably half of them picked the book to read during independent reading time. Such a great book!!
What a fantastic idea for your class – and yes, an eerie voice is a must!
Yes LOVE The Dark!!!!! It’s one of my favorite read alouds. I read it to my third grade class for the first time earlier this year. We were on the edge of our seats in suspense! I was concerned it was too scary, but it’s ending is so lovely!
So fun to picture your class full of suspense. I think this is why spooky books and stories are so memorable from my childhood? So many feelings all at once!
Frankenstein Makes A Sandwich by Adam Rex, Dragon’s Halloween by Dav Pilkey, The Witches’ Supermarket by Susan Meddaugh are some of our October favorites!
Hi Selina, I haven’t heard of any of these, thanks for your recommendations! Excited to check them out.
Ah we love Lazlo and The Dark….and the illustrations are so clever
