When was the last time you got out your bucket and oversized sponges for a family car wash? It’s one of our favorite weekend chores and today we’re sharing a bit about it with Dawn whose celebrating 40 years of helping save wildlife…
Family Car Wash
I’ve worked with Dawn before. You might remember when I took a trip with Dawn to visit The Marine Mammal Center and International Bird Rescue Center here in the bay area. I’ve always been so impressed with their commitment to animal safety and health. Since 1978, Dawn has helped save more than 75,000 birds and marine animals who were the innocent victims of oil spills and environmental catastrophes.
This month, Dawn is celebrating 40 years helping save wildlife with a new wildlife anniversary label on their products. A great reminder of the incredible partnerships Dawn has maintained to support the rehabilitation of wildlife for 40 years.
Dawn is the only dishwashing brand trusted by wildlife experts for decades for its “tough on grease, but gentle on skin” formula that makes it great for household use as well. I’m getting my car detailed when we get back from summer trips and we’re doing a little washing prep with Dawn. It’s the best way to strip the car down before doing other treatments and waxing. I’ve never seen myself as a car fanatic but after buying this classic old 1986 BMW a few months ago I’ve been a bit more meticulous about taking care of it. It’s such a fun car to drive around town here and feel so good to have a car with a bit of a personality.
My kids love helping with washing the car. We grab oversized sponges and fill up a big bucket with water with a drop of Dawn for a mild cleaning. Then the kids take turns using the hose (which needs a bit of supervision), getting the car soaped up with the sponges and rags, hosing again, and then finishing with towel drying. We crank up the summer jams and if it’s warm enough, get in our swimsuits too.
Dot’s favorite part is the washing with the sponges and rags, but unfortunately if anyone is going to be the target of a unavoidable hosing spray, it’ll probably be poor Dot. Do you have a favorite family chore you like to do?

I am not sure if you are aware of this:
When you wash a car not at a car wash, the water, soap, oil, grit, and other residues all go directly into the municipal storm sewer system, which is discharged into a watercourse, without being treated first. Car washes have to first treat their water before discharging it.
Now I wish I’d helped my Dad clean his car! You make it sound so fun 🙂
