Overwhelmed by all the varieties of oranges to choose from at the farmers market last week, I was suddenly struck with a critical question: which variety of orange produces the very best tasting juice? Time to roll up our sleeves for a taste test…
At our local grocery store they have a machine that squeezes fresh oj for you, but they always use the same (albeit dull) naval variety. What about all the other varieties of oranges? What about clementines and tangerines and everything in between?
Why have I never tasted a glass of clementine juice??
We didn’t have a fancy juicing machine, but the regular old hand squeezer worked just fine. It was so tempting to take a quick swig before we were through cutting and juicing all 7 varieties, but we persevered to the end (with just a few licked fingers).
Conclusion: It’s a shame tangerine and tangelo juice isn’t a regular offering because it is SO SO GOOD. Also, comparatively to all of the others, juiced naval oranges are barely edible. The bar is officially raised for fresh squeezed orange juice!
these pictures are stunning, Liz!
It has been a few years since I have lived by a Trader Joe’s but I think that they sell (or at least they used to) Tangerine juice in the refrigerated juice section.
Loved, loved, LOVED this blog post! When I was young hand squeezed orange juice was my favourite drink of all time – oranges are, to this day, my favourite fruits. Shame I had a bad case of asthma growing up and it triggered my attacks, so I could never drink it. I think it only made me love citrus fruits more! 😀

Oranges at the farmers market!! How sweet would that be! I’ve never seen a blood orange so purple!! Farmers market in March also awesome! Can’t wait to branch out!
We have huge citrus trees in our backyard. Our favorite juice mix is half Arizona Sweet and half Tangelo. Our trees are done producing for the season, and I am sad to see them go, but the best part about having citrus trees happens right now, after the fruit is gone: the super fragrant blossoms!
