DIY Felt Birthday Crowns

Scandinavian Gatherings_Felt Crown 2_Photography by Charity Burggraaf

My friend Melissa wrote a beautiful book called Scandinavian Gatherings; From Afternoon Fika to Midsummer Feast. When we made sibling gifts this past Christmas, these crowns were the homemade gift Henry chose to make for Edie and Dot. It’s such a simple idea, but I love how classic they are. Perfect for any kind of celebrations. Today Melissa was kind enough to share the tutorial for the project from her book…

Supplies:
1 (12-by-18-inch) sheet wool-blend felt
Sharp scissors
Heavy-duty double-sided fusible interfacing
Ironing board Iron
Clean kitchen towel or pressing cloth

  1. Cut the sheet of felt in half with the scissors so that you have two pieces that are 6 by 18 inches. Cut a piece of fusible interfacing to 6 by 18 inches as well.
  2. Lay out one piece of felt on the ironing board. Lay the fusible interfacing on top of the felt with the bumpy side down and the paper side up. Iron the interfacing onto the felt following the directions on the interfacing packaging, and allow the felt to cool completely.
  3. Peel the paper off the cooled felt/interfacing combo. Place the other piece of felt on top of the interfacing, cover it with a clean kitchen towel or pressing cloth, and press down firmly while ironing to adhere the two pieces of felt to each other. Allow the felt to cool completely.
  4. Lay out the cooled felt so that it is wider than it is tall. Next, make an outline of dots to create the points of the crown. Make a small dot with the pencil along the top edge 11⁄2 inches in from the left edge. From that dot, make a series of dots every 3 inches. You will make six dots altogether on this line. Next, make a dot on the left edge of the felt and 3 inches down from the top edge. Continue making dots every 3 inches along this line until you get to the right edge of the felt. Make a dot on the right edge as well. You’ll make seven dots altogether along this line.
  5. Use the pencil and ruler to connect the dots. Begin at the left edge of the felt. Draw a line from the dot on the left edge up to the first dot on the top edge, then back down to the next dot, and so on. End by drawing a line from the last dot on the top edge to the dot on the right edge. Cut out the triangles with the scissors.
  6. Use the hole punch to make two small holes on both the left and right sides of the felt. Make one hole about 1⁄2 inch in from the side and up from the bottom edge, and the other hole
1⁄2 inch from the side and 21⁄2 inches up from the bottom edge.
  7. Cut a piece of ribbon about 24 inches long. Poke the ribbon through the bottom-left hole and pull it through about halfway. Pick up the felt and form it into a crown, then thread one end of the ribbon through the bottom-right hole so that it mirrors the left side.
  8. Crisscross the ribbons like you would a shoelace, taking the ribbon from the right side up to the top-left hole and the ribbon from the left side up to the top-right hole. Poke the ribbons through the holes, and tie them in a nice bow in the center. The laces can be loosened and tightened as needed to fit the owner’s head.
  9. Tie a small knot in both ends of the ribbon to prevent fraying.
