• Easy and Last Minute Couples Costumes Pt. 1

    camp counselors-04

You may remember last years feature for easy and last minute couples costumes starring Katrina and Quinn! (Part 1 and Part 2) Well this year, we are back with more! It was fun to team up with the old gang and throw in some new players as well. This year we focused on things you could pull from your closet or local thrift store without having to do too much work. When I was single I always found Halloween to be stressful because I couldn’t ever decide what I wanted to be until the very last minute (Halloween night!) and then I would settle on something basic and boring, like a ghost or pumpkin. After getting married things got even more complicated, trying to find a costume/theme that worked for two…. and that my husband would agree to wear.  I think the key is to not over complicate things, and start with what you already have…. so here is to a stress free Halloween and easy clever couples costumes!

Photography is by  Ashley Thalman, styling by Karli Haglund (karli.elaine@gmail.com) with assistance from Olivia Maude Lee Whittle. Creative direction by Liz Stanley and copy and graphics by Ashley Aikele.

    1. Camp Counselors

    camp counselors-01

Dressing as a camp counselor can go in many directions… which makes it a great flexible option for Halloween. We went in a humorous direction with 70’s camp counselors. You could also do something more vintage and do a “Moonrise Kingdom” counselor. The fun thing about this costume is, there is no right or wrong way to do it!

Sweat bands, vintage thrifted tee’s, cargo shorts or gym shorts, long tube socks, sneakers, clipboards and lanyards.

two more awesome couples costume ideas after the jump…

    2. Dirty Dancing

A good way to find a costume for Halloween is to look through your old movies. The classic 80’s movie “Dirty Dancing” felt like a great option for a simple, homemade costume with likeable characters. Who doesn’t love “Baby” and Johnny’s relationship? Be careful though, your friends might have some high expectations and want to see some dance moves and lifts!

Him: Black Tee (Target and H&M have great affordable options), black pants, black shoes
Her: Thrifted sleeveless button up, rolled up jean shorts

Quinn and Katrina practice the famous “lift” from the movie…

    3. AcroBATS!

For those of you who like to dress as something a little more spooky or Halloween-ish, this costume is perfect! Bat’s with an acrobat twist…the perfect amount of bat like features and acrobat spandex. This costume is best accompanied by acrobatic jumps and moves.

Black spandex, Black long sleeved top with a hood, Black furry vest (Quinn is wearing a zip-up vest and Katrina is wearing a little girls’ shrug worn backwards and latched with a safety pin, both were purchased at a local thrift store), Black eye masks and bat ears (both found at a halloween store), Black face paint (for the lips). Instructions for making the wings below…

    1) Purchase black fabric
    2) Measure the arm span of each “bat-to-be”
    3) Cut the fabric roughly 4 ft x arms length
    4) With chalk, outline the wing design along the bottom, coming to a peak in the middle
    5) Cut along that line and finish the edge on a sewing machine
    6) On the top end of the wings, fold over 10-12 inches
    7) Starting on each end, stitch inward, towards the center of the wings, creating arm sleeves on both sides
    8) Leave a 1.5-2 ft gap in the middle, cut a circular neckhole out of the flap that you had folded to create the sleeves.
    9) Use a safety pin for closure on the front of the neckhole, to be worn directly below the chin.

These are so great! And such perfect timing – my boyfriend and I have been going back and forth trying to figure out what to be. Those camp counselors are hilarious, they remind me of Wet Hot American Summer with Amy Poehler!
