DIY: Adding Pockets to a Skirt or Dress

Last week I showed you how I refashioned this white $20 dress with some hot pink fabric and today I’ll share a tutorial (as promised!) on adding hidden pockets to any dress or skirt.

Cut out four pieces of the shape above. It doesn’t have to be exact. It will be on the inside and just needs to be a bit longer than your hand. Measure one piece right up against the side seam of your skirt or dress. Add a pin as a marker on the dress on either side as shown above. Those markers will tell you where you need to tear the seam to fit your pocket.

With a seam ripper, carefully rip that seam open between your two markers.
Now you’ll be sewing a pocket piece to each side of that ripped seam. Separately. One will be sewed to the top and one to the bottom. Flip the seam open and carefully pin one pocket piece to it.

It should look like this when you’re done with the first half. See how it’s only sewed to one side?
Now you’ll do the same thing to the other side of the seam so they both have pocket pieces sewed on to them separately.

When both pieces are sewed on, lay them flat as shown above. They should line up nicely. Pin and sew as I marked in gray above: starting on the white and sewing around the edge of the whole pocket down to the other side, ending on the white. That’s it! Trim and iron flat and do the same with the other pocket.
